April. Hello again Mr. Milestone, so happy to see you.
One morning, the boys are sitting at the island eating breakfast while I get things together for school.
Sam says: Mom, today for snack, I would like fig newtons & two fruit snacks & that’s all. okay mom?
Mom: Oh, okay. Thanks for telling me Sam, I’ll be happy to pack you fig newtons & fruities.
Sam: great.
Mom: Sam that makes me so happy when you tell me what you want. When you tell me what you want I can try to do it for you. If you don’t tell me, I won’t know what you want. So thanks for telling me.
Sam: you’re welcome.
This monumental snack requesting goes on daily thereafter; sometimes he needs a prompt to tell me, but he always tells me, what he wants. (THIS IS HUGE!) And it’s not always the same thing either, he changes it up.
Fast forward a few days:
Sam: Mom for snack today I want 2 applesauces and fruities.
Mom: 2 applesauces & fruities?
Sam: Yes.
Mom: Okay, 2 applesauces and fruities coming up.
Sam: & Mom I want my apple juice without ice, okay mom?
Mom: Oh, you don’t want ice in your apple juice for snack time?
Sam: No I don’t.
Mom: Oh, okay. Thanks for telling me.
He’s been getting ice for over a year now in his juice to go. Has he been thinking about that all this time, or did he just start to realize the power of asking? Whatever it is, I’m glad it’s surfacing and he’s seeing the results. I hope that it starts a trend.
Man, hope that it starts a trend? Yeah, something like that!
A few days later, he comes home with a note from his school assistant saying that Sam & the kids at his table were talking about Goldfish crackers today. Evidently one of the kids had them, and Sam told her, “Ms. Michelle, I want goldfish crackers for my snack,” so she told him she would let me know so I could get them for him. Sam said, “can you please write her a note?” She said she would, meaning later. He insisted, “can you write it now please?” He must have really wanted those goldfish!
Goldfish crackers? Because some other kids had them? You noticed? You want to have them too? —> mad rush to Costco to buy a 3600oz box of goldfish.
Again, typical kids, asking for whatever they want and then expecting to get it – behavior we often discourage. A special mom’s kid asking for anything, I’ll move a brick wall to get it. You thought of it and told me all on your own. You bet you can have it! Anything else you want?
Thank goodness he hasn’t asked for a pony or a little sister. Some things just can’t be done (or undone -ha!).
April is not over yet. It’s still pouring. & May? May! May, because of those amazing April showers, May is blossoming like crazy.
